This two-story greenhouse serves as a teaching space where PS 50 Manhattan students grow fruits and vegetables as part of their curriculum. Located on a previously unused second-story roof of the 1974 brutalist school building, the greenhouse acts as another puzzle piece within the existing reinforced concrete framework overlooking the East River.

Designed to support the school's established food cultivation program, the facility was developed through close collaboration with faculty and students and dedicated to the school's namesake, Congressman Vito Marcantonio. The greenhouse accommodates both hydroponic and soil-based growing systems with a rainwater harvesting system and calibrated irrigation network of pumps, cisterns, and drains. Interior steel planters, integrated cables, and railings enable vertical growing within the double-height space. Student-controlled LED fixtures serve as classroom aids, allowing experiential learning about the effects of natural versus artificial light on plant growth and photosynthesis.
